About this siteI started this website in May 2008 with the goal to give my students and other academics a 'guided entrance' to the field of innovation research in economics. The interest in innovation related topics in the field of economics dates back to the classic writings of Smith and Schumpeter, who have recognized the importance of innovation and technological change. However, unlike other topics in economics like labor, industrial organization or macroeconomics, innovation has not established itself as a separate field in the profession. Yet, many different fields in economics have generated invaluable insights into the causes and consequences of innovation and technological change. In addition, innovation and technological change are arguably important factors in most fields in economics. Keeping track of all the different developments is challenging, maybe even impossible. Yet, an attempt to do so is rewarding. This site tries to provide some assistance. I am aware that any choice I make regarding what and what not belongs to this field is ultimately biased by my own preferences, experiences, insights and ignorance. In an attempt to reduce these factors and to do some degree of justice to the field, I relied to a large extent on bibliographic search methods based on keywords and simple statistics. I used this approach both for setting up this website and the graduate course I teach at Erasmus School of Economics. I am open to comments and suggestions of users and I will try to maintain this site within my limited time budget. |
